{"id":9164,"date":"2023-04-05T17:29:25","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T17:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.topic.lk\/?p=9164"},"modified":"2023-04-05T17:29:28","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T17:29:28","slug":"jaaf-reinforces-commitment-to-journey-towards-zero-waste-at-responsible-fashion-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/topic.lk\/9164\/","title":{"rendered":"JAAF reinforces commitment to \u2018Journey Towards Zero Waste\u2019   at Responsible Fashion Summit\u00a0&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>JAAF is a key partner to the Responsible Fashion Summit that aims to define Sri Lanka apparel as an industry that prioritizes sustainable practices for a greener future<\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The forum is a significant opportunity to showcase the industry\u2019s designs, innovation, sustainability and circularity.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2018Journey Towards Zero Waste\u2019 was the topic of an informative panel discussion held at the 7th Responsible Fashion Summit organized by Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) last week in partnership with Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) and Kerry Logistics Limited.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Secretary General of JAAF Yohan Lawrence highlighted identified the forum as a significant opportunity to showcase the Sri Lankan apparel industry\u2019s designs, innovation, sustainability and circularity to the world.\u00a0In his keynote address he stated: \u201cAt the core of the industry is its environmental footprint and the \u00a0management of this is central \u00a0to Sri Lanka apparel\u2019s business model. This forum is a platform to highlight the industry\u2019s journey beyond \u2018Garments Without Guilt\u2019, giving the world a glimpse of the industry\u2019s initiatives in its \u2018Journey Towards Zero Waste\u2019. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-container-2 wp-block-gallery-1 wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"455\" data-id=\"9166\"  src=\"https:\/\/topic.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Image-2-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topic.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Image-2-7.jpg 800w, https:\/\/topic.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Image-2-7-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/topic.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Image-2-7-768x437.jpg 768w, https:\/\/topic.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Image-2-7-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/topic.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Image-2-7-696x396.jpg 696w, https:\/\/topic.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Image-2-7-738x420.jpg 738w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Founder and Managing Director of CFW, the Responsible Fashion Movement and Founding Member of the Commonwealth Fashion Council in London Ajai Vir Singh commended JAAF for understanding and supporting the vision propelling the summit. He emphasized that with supply chains not being present in the western hemisphere, platforms such as the Responsible Fashion Summit are crucial in showcasing how Sri Lanka leads the way in sourcing in South Asia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The panelists included sustainability heads and logistic experts in the apparel industry, who highlighted the importance of collaboration and stakeholder engagement if the industry is to ramp up its sustainability efforts and make it accessible for all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs a country, we have the DNA of sustainability and have been progressive in our approach,\u201d said Director of Group Sustainable Business MAS Holdings Nemathie Kooragamage. \u201cIt is important however, to tackle the reduction of waste and consumption holistically. It\u2019s not about reducing waste; it\u2019s about making the fullest use of the raw material and how we make sure there is a circular economy. For that, a lot of work has to happen. The industry must invest in technological unlocks to ensure we can keep materials in use and continuously recycle. A circular economy is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With freight and logistics playing a critical role in transportation of goods and services, Director of Global Accounts of Kerry Logistics Jan Willem Westerink noted that access to renewable fuel would be essential to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability. \u201cThe entirety of the way we operate in shipping and logistics needs to change. It will be a long-term process, especially in sourcing renewable fuel where demand is high and supply is limited. Innovation and initiative will need to be taken to make the costs affordable as it will be a requirement ten years from now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking on affordability, Director of Dynawash Shahid Sangani highlighted the importance of reducing consumption from the design process. \u201cZero waste is a long journey, and the first step begins from the design process where waste reduction is mooted by rethinking and redesigning products which can be recycled with minimum resources.\u201d Dynawash has pioneered the use of tea based dyes for apparel using what would normally be the waste product from the manufacture of iced tea, into a range of dyes which are now commercially available.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">General Manager (Group engineering &amp; Sustainability) Teejay Group Edga Melan noted that the perception of waste should be looked at through a different lens and used an example.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWaste is not waste until you waste it\u201d \u2013 this is our slogan. We perceive waste where we can bring wealth creation for our shareholders. At Teejay, for example, we have developed organic fertilizer with boiler ash in collaboration with the agriculture ministry. This is already being tested on certain crops and has yielded results.
