Great sportsmanship & super entertainment at ‘C Rugby’…

  • Combined teams of Wesley/Methodist team are Plate Champions, St. Peter’s/Holy Family win the Bowl
  • Vidyartha old boy R M C B Rathnayake & Hillwood old girl Shalinda Jansen win most valuable male and female players
  • Runners up – Cup Championship won by Kingswood/Girls High School Kandy, Plate Championship by Dharmaraja/Mahamaya, Bowl Championship by Isipathana/St. Paul’s Milagiriya

With over two thousand five hundred in the stands cheering their favorite combined old boy’s and girl’s rugby teams, the annual tag rugby festival was held on September 16th with some exciting rugby played on the field. The brother/sister school team of Vidyartha and Pushpadana emerged C Rugby champions while the runners up were also from Kandy, the combined team of Kingswood and Girls High School.

The Plate Championship was won by the combined team of Wesley/Methodist, while Dharmaraja College and Mahamaya emerged runners up.  Winning the Bowl Championship was St. Peter’s and Holy Family Convent, with Isipathana and St. Paul’s Milagiriya combining to emerge runners up. The Most Valuable Male Player was Vidyartha’s R M C B Ratnayake while Shalinda Jansen from Hillwood College was crowned Most Valuable Female Player.

The C Rugby tournament which draws schools’ rugby stars of yesteryear is a first in the history of rugby in Sri Lanka with counterparts from sister schools joining brother school teams. Four female players from Pushpadana joined Vidyartha College rugby players to win with a score 2 – 1 against the Kingswood/Girls High School team.

The action-packed tournament kicked off at 1 pm in the midst of a carnival atmosphere with music by Slipping Chairs, Magic Box Mixup, Jam Lab and some of Sri Lanka’s best DJs adding to the party mood in the action-packed rugby carnival. The event truly riveted to school times of yesteryear with the schools even having tents and cheerleaders.  Best Tent Décor was won by Trinity College while D S Senanayake was adjudged the Best Cheerleading Squad.

The Plate title was won by the combined team of Wesley and Methodist scoring 2 – 1 beating Dharmaraja and Mahamaya, while St. Peter’s & Holy Family clinched the Bowl title beating the Isipathana/St. Paul’s Milagiriya team with a score of 2-1

The event was organized by AGOAL International, headed by former Isipathana College, CR&FC and Sri Lanka rugby player and renowned international rugby referee Dilroy Fernando. AGOAL Rugby has organized this tournament seven times previously.
