Junior Golf Development Committee of Sri Lanka Golf continued the conduct of the Regional Junior Open Golf Championship in 2022, despite the numerous challenges in the scenic surroundings of the most beautiful and challenging Victoria Golf & Country Resort in Kandy.
The VGCR Golf Course in Rajawella in prime condition produced some excellent Golf over the two rounds discovering much talent in the 4 Age Group Categories of 09+ & Under Boys & Girls Copper Division over Nine Holes, Bronze division 10 -11 yrs, Gold & Silver Division Amalgamated Girls 12 – 18 Years, Silver Division Boys 12 – 14+ Years and Gold Division Boys 15 – 18+.
Haroon Aslam playing on his home Course was a worthy junior champion annexing the Gold Division with a two-round total of 147, just 3 over par for a comfortable five stroke victory from Danushan Kanas Kumar of the RCGC. Sankanath Hesara from Anuradapura Golf Academy and Imran Nazeer from the NEGC secured 3rd and 4th place in the Junior Open Gold respectively.
Reshan Algama showed his top form by winning the silver division by 14 shots from Jacob Norton. Coming third was Adithya Weerasinghe from Anuradhapura and Keshav Algama taking fourth place. In the bronze division Thejas Rathis Kanth played two good rounds to win big from Kaitlyn Norton. In the same division Nisini Gunawardena of VGCR came third and followed by Collen Poruthota of VGCR in fourth place.
Most junior category the Copper division Jaeden Sathasivam of RCGC won by 1 shot from Anuja Methsara of Anuradahapura Academy, closely in third place by 1 shot difference Yuvan Rathis Kanth. Much talent and competition was seen in this category among the junior golfers and see talent scouting for future. In the girls division combined age group 12 to 18 yrs, Dinumi Sanjana of Anuradhapura played consistent golf to take the win.
The colourful Prize Giving followed the competitive Junior regional Open Championship and Mr. Indika Dissanayake, Senior Business Manager and Achala Ramanayake, Marketing Manager representing Prima Sunrise Bread, the Principal Sponsor of the Regional Championship gave away the prizes. Mr. Sai Kasthurirathne Head of Tournament Rules, Mr. Asela Wevita General Manager of VGCR, Ms. Niloo Jayathilake, Chairperson of Junior Golf graced the occasion encouraging the future junior talent of Golfers in Sri Lanka. “The juniors are improving steadily and the youngsters from Anuradhapura have improved much with the support and Course facilities extended by the Sri Lanka Air Force providing the Heritage Golf Course Anuradhapura Facilities” Said Niloo Jayathilaka the Head of Junior Golf Development of Sri Lanka Golf.
