Women Esports athletes shine at Gamer.LK’s Women’s Cyber Games

The 4th edition of the annual Women’s Cyber Games (WCG) event, conceptualised and executed by Sri Lanka’s premier Esports company, Gamer.LK, came to a close recently. The multi-title Esports tournament which began in 2019, is held each year and dedicated towards empowering the female Esports athletes in the country allowing them to showcase their skills in the competitive field of Esports.

Over 300 female gamers from varying social backgrounds across the island signed up for this year’s event which was held entirely online, allowing participants to play remotely from the comfort of their homes. Esports is known as the fastest-growing sport in the country and an officially recognised sport in Sri Lanka by the Ministry of Sports.

“With Esports positioned to be one of the biggest sports in Sri Lanka, we at Gamer.LK want to ensure equal opportunity for all athletes to excel in the sport, regardless of gender. The performances & passion that participants showed at the Women’s Cyber Games was remarkable, and a testament to the skill level of Sri Lankan women Esports athletes” said Raveen Wijayatilake, CEO of Gamer.LK.

The Women’s Cyber Games championship was played over a month of exciting matches across 13 game titles. Tech Morph Frost Fairies captained by Gimhani ‘Tiana’ Thashmila came out on top in Mobile Legends while ZEGG.FE captained by Sumuduni ‘MeduZa’ Shashikala was victorious in Valorant, which were the two team titles held this year.

In the solo titles, Kaumini ‘PiK4CHU’ Gunasinghe took the spotlight as she emerged victorious in multiple game titles; Real Cricket, Valorant free-for-all and Counter Strike Global Offensive. Zahra Thajudeen got the best of her opponents emerging the champion of 1v1 Dota 2, while  Sajitha ‘PurpleCat’ Samarakoon emerged the victor in 1v1 League of Legends. Nadeeshani ‘FoXy’ Jayasinghe (Clash Royale), Tharushi ‘Miss_Detective’ Liyanage (Call of Duty free-for-all), Madushika ‘BlackSpirit247’ Amarasekara (Mario Kart Tour 1v1), Daariya ‘STORM DARIYA’ Azim (Call of Duty Mobile) and Shamen ‘WEDxSATANIC’ Edward (PUBG Mobile) emerged champions in each of their respective game titles.

Gamer.LK has more exciting plans ahead for larger, mass-audience Esports events scheduled across the year. Esports in Sri Lanka has been the most resilient, successful and fastest growing sport, amidst a global pandemic.
