The Sri Lanka Junior Golf Match-Play Championship Gold Division 3rd Seeded Jevahn Sathasivam beat Reshan Algama on the 19th hole with both teenagers playing good Golf.
Reshan Algama fresh from his victory at the Royal Colombo Golf Club Championship concluded recently becoming the second youngest at 15 years to win the RCGC Championship lost-out to Jevahn whom Reshan beat in the Club Championship.
It was an up and down battle with Jevahn taking a 3up lead at the 8th hole but Reshan pulled it back with a birdie on the 9th and soon made the Match All-Square after the 15th and won the crucial 16th hole to be 1 up. Jevahn recalling the RCGC Championship experience when he was 2 up on Reshan and lost the match on the 20th, halved the 17th and won the 18th with a par to go down the 19th sudden-death hole! Jevahn skied the Tee shot while Reshan drove well and then the sensational second shot from about 200 yards to the green Jevahn hit a peach ‘Rescue’ shot to the middle of the green, putting pressure on Reshan’s 2nd shot, to seal the match with a Par on the 19th hole. Jevahn meets K. Danushan the top seed who beat Vinuda Weerasinghe cozily 5 & 4 in the top half of the draw.
In the Girls junior Championship for the Rukmini Kodagoda Trophy, Kaya Daluwatte beat Dinumi Sanjana from the Anuradhapura Golf Academy 9 & 7 to meet Sherin Balasuriya in the final. Sherin beat Dhavinka Kanag-Iswarana 6 &4.
Adithya Weerasinghe from the Anuradhapura Golf Academy who knocked-out the top seed in the Silver Division for Boys in the Quarter-final beat Keshav Algama 2 up in a close battle. In the bottom half of the draw, Kaiyan Johnpulle defeated Shenal Nimsith comfortably 4 & 3.
Kaitlyn Norton seeded 1 in the Silver Division for Girls eased to the final beating Amindi Umaya 7 & 6 and will play Keya Abhayaratne who reached the final defeating Dilini Amarawansa 2 & 1.
In the Bronze Division, Top Seeded Revaan Amarasinghe showed his consistency beating Lavidu Premarathna 3 & 2. Yehansa Senanayake the 6th seed, had a very close match with L.G. Anuja Methsara the 2nd Seed, to win on the 19th hole, a very creditable victory to topple the 2nd seed.
The Girls Bronze Division top seed Genuli Abesundara beat Vihara Herath 3 72 and will play Nimasha Dhamli who beat Hesandi Gayansa Meepawala 4 & 3. The All Anuradhapura Final is another credit for the development of junior Golf.
The Copper Division for 9+ & under juniors Jaeden Sathasivam seeded 1 comfortably beat Ananya Kishanthan 4 & 3 and will play Yuvan Rathis Kanth in the final who also won his match 4 & 3. The final in the Copper division should be closely contested.
The Sri Lanka Junior Golf Match-play Championship, sponsored by P&S Bakers , provides the platform for juniors to get the experience of Match-Play competition and is the only junior championship for Match-play on the Junior golfing calendar. Whilst the qualifiers proceed to the Match-play stage of the championship, Plate Medal play events continue for the non-qualifiers to encourage the juniors.
In the special Plate event on day 2 W.G. Isuru Shimal carded a gross 82 in the 15 – 18+ Age group category to win the Days Plate prize.
Ayaan Gunasekera returned the best score of 81 in the Silver Division for the 12 -14+ age group category in the Silver plate.
The Bronze division plate event over 14 holes was won by W.D.Y. Roanal Scofield with a gross 78 clear from the rest.
The Rukmini Kodagoda Trophy Finals for the Boys and Girls Junior Champion 2023, will be worked off on Thursday morning along with the finals of the Silver, Bronze and Copper divisions. The enthralling Five Final Matches will be followed by the prize giving hosted by the generous and proud sponsors of the Sri Lanka Junior Golf Match-Play Championship P & S Bakers, organized by Sri Lanka Golf Junior Golf Development Committee.
