Gotabaya Rajapaksa to return to Sri Lanka

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to return to Sri Lanka from Singapore, Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said today.

He said that Rajapaksa had travelled to Singapore through the right channels and was not in hiding.

Asked when the former President is expected to return, Gunawardena said that he was not aware of an exact date.

He expressed these views while speaking to reporters at the post Cabinet press conference today.

A rights group documenting alleged abuses in Sri Lanka has filed a criminal complaint with Singapore’s Attorney General, seeking the arrest of the former President for his role in alleged crimes committed during the war.

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) said Rajapaksa committed grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions during the civil war in 2009 when he was country’s defence chief.
